UBC Environmental Design Studio: Constructions

For the past two years, Lodge has been teaching the 3rd year Environmental Design studio at UBC's School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Leading these undergraduate students through their first forays into Architectural design, we explore the creation and construction of space through the lens of Vancouver's housing crisis with a focus on the Missing Middle.

Missing Middle is commonly defined as a range of multi-unit or clustered housing types compatible in scale with single-family homes that help meet a growing demand for affordable urban living. The term work of the studio proposes a residential building of 6 units on an existing single family lot in East Vancouver. Issues of ageing in place, income diversity, and how to create community among a group of strangers are core concerns.
